The playoffs are a best of seven format with the first team to hit four wins taking the 2021/22 Liga Basket Serie A crown. Virtus Bologna are the defending champions, winning their 16th title last season but standing in their way are Italy’s most successful side with Olimpia Milano on a whopping 28 titles.
In last season’s final, Virtus Bologna only needed four games to take the title, beating top seeds Olimpia Milano, and they go into this first playoff match as the top seeds themselves. The defending champions went 26 and four in the regular season, finishing two wins clear of second-placed Olimpia Milano, to hand themselves a quarterfinal draw against Victoria Libertas.
A best of five format, Virtus Bologna needed just three games to seal their spot in the semifinals, winning the first match 82-76 before following it up with 70-51 and 75-55 victories. It was a similar story in the semifinals against Derthona Basket as Virtus Bologna won 77-73, 91-70 and 77-69 to seal a second consecutive final.
Second seed Olimpia Milano lost just six games in the regular season with 24 wins and had the best defence across the campaign, allowing 2,155 points. Like Virtus Bologna, Olimpia Milano only needed three games in their quarterfinal tie against Reggio Emilia, beating the seventh-seed 91-82, 91-65 and 89-59.
Again it was the same story in the semifinals, this time against Dinamo Sassari, with three straight wins scoring 88-71, 91-82 and 87-69 to set up this final between the top two sides. Olimpia Milano are now looking to win their first title in four years since lifting the trophy in 2017/18 while also avenging last season’s final defeat/
