Napoli vs Verona build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Thanks to their excellent end to the campaign, Napoli go into Serie A’s final day with their Champions League destiny in their own hands. A win for Napoli would guarantee them a place at Europe’s top table next season, while they would also secure a top-four finish as long as they equal Juventus’ result. Juventus were the last team to beat Napoli in Serie A, with Gattuso’s side following up a 2-1 defeat with six wins and two draws. They go into this game having won their past three and know a repeat of last weekend’s 2-0 win over Fiorentina would secure the Champions League.

Napoli may be thankful that they are up against a Verona side that are not chasing, or fighting, anything on the final day. Verona are currently 10th, 17 points behind the final European spot and 12 clear of the drop zone (with relegation already settled in Serie A). They are also pretty much guaranteed to finish 10th, with Bologna three points back and facing Juventus in their final game. Bologna were the opponents last time out and 2-2 draw extended Verona’s poor run of form, now winless in their past eight games.

  • Napoli (vs Fiorentina): Meret; Di Lorenzo, Manolas, Rrahmani, Hysaj; Fabian, Bakayoko; Politano, Zielinski, Insigne; Osimhen.
  • Verona (vs Bologna): Pandur; Dimarco, Gunter, Ceccherini; Faraoni, Ilic, Bessa, Lazovic; Barak*, Zaccagni; Kalinic.

Napoli have no fresh injury concerns but remain without Kalidou Koulibaly, Stanislav Lobotka and Faouzi Ghoulam. Antonin Barak is suspended for Verona and Ronaldo Vieira once again misses out through injury.

Player to watch: Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli)

Lorenzo Insigne goes into the final day of the 2020/21 Serie A season looking to write his name in the Napoli history books. Insigne is already a Napoli legend, having come through the club’s academy to be a mainstay in their team over the past nine years, including two as captain following Marek Hamsik’s departure in 2019.

Last time out against Fiorentina, Insigne scored his 19th Serie A goal of the season, the most he has managed in a single top-flight campaign, beating the 18 he managed in 2016/17. But a goal this weekend would see him join a very exclusive Napoli list.

In Napoli’s history, only one other Italian has scored 20 goals in a single Serie A season, with that man being Antonio Vojak (four times). You can be forgiven for not knowing him, as the fourth and final time Vojak netted 20 goals in a single Serie A season for Napoli came in 1933/34. So for Insigne, the quest to steer Napoli to the Champions League again could also see him end an 87-year wait.
