Inter Milan have can close the gap on second-placed Lazio when they travel to Hellas Verona in Serie A on Thursday night.

Antonio Conte’s side may have slipped in the title race (now 11 points off Juventus with eight games remaining) but they can move a step closer to the runners-up spot with victory over Verona. Lazio’s shock defeat against Lecce on Tuesday has opened the door for the chasing pack. Victory for Inter would close the gap to just the single point.

But, Verona will be no walk in the park. It took an 83rd minute Nicolo Barella strike in the reverse fixture to secure all the three points for Inter, and Ivan Juric’s side are still in contention for European football. The Yellow and Blues are currently six points outside the top six and will be desperate to pull off a giant killing to keep their faint hopes of a Europa League fairy tale alive.

Verona & Inter’s previous line-ups:

  • Verona (vs Brescia): Silvestri; Rrahmani, Empereur, Kumbulla; Faraoni, Badu, Veloso, Lazovic; Di Carmine, Borini*, Zaccagni.
  • Inter (vs Bologna): Handanovic; D’Ambrosio, De Vrij, Bastoni*; Candreva, Brozovic, Gagliardini, Young; Eriksen, Lukaku, Martinez.

Conte will be without breakthrough star Alessandro Bastoni at the back after the 21-year-old picked up a red card in the previous outing, but Milan Skriniar returns from a three-match suspension so is expected to slot straight back into the starting XI. Fabio Borini is a doubt for this match after coming off in the 34th minute against Brescia, so Valerio Verre (his replacement on Sunday) will likely start in his absence.

Players to watch:

Verona: Inter Milan offer plenty of quality in attack and defence, but their midfield is equally as solid, with the likes of Roberto Gagliardini, Marcelo Brozovic and Christian Eriksen combining to boast tenacity, creativity and an elite passing range. For Verona to contain the Nerazzurri machine their midfield will need to be in tiptop condition, and that means stand-in captain Miguel Veloso starting from the off. The 34-year-old brings balance and composure to the middle of the park for Juric and will be relishing the chance to clash with Inter’s formidable midfield trident. He joined the newly-promoted club last summer and is one of the main reasons they have shone this season.

Inter: Despite the wobble against Bologna last time out, Conte’s side were just beginning to flex their goalscoring muscles. The Milan-based club have managed 14 goals in just five games since football’s return, and Romelu Lukaku has been involved in three of those. That takes his tally for the season to 20 in Serie A, his first time hitting that seasonal milestone since Everton in 2016/17.

It also means he is just one of three players in Serie A to hit 20+ for the campaign, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo (26) and Ciro Immobile (29). The prolific Belgian will be hopeful of adding to his haul in the next eight games and edging closer to the Capocannoniere.

Scoreline prediction: Verona 0-2 Inter
