Verona team news
After losing their first games to start the season Verona have lost just twice in their last 13 outings, and now sit 10thin the league table, well within shouting distance of European qualification. However, strong if inconsistent, Verona come into the weekend looking to win consecutive league matches for the first time this season.
Verona are good for an eventful match, having both scored and conceded in all but two of their outings. However, after shipping 17 goals in their first eight league matches, Verona have conceded just 11 in their preview eight – hardly the stuff of ‘catenaccio’, but a decided improvement. Meanwhile, their attack has provided a steady stream of goals, with multiple tallies in 10 of 16 games, and three outings with at least four goals – the most recent an incredible comeback against rivals Venezia, in which they conceded three times in the first half-hour, but score four times in the second half to secure the win.
Verona will have to shuffle the deck in defence, as centre-backs Pawel Dawidowicz and Koray Gunter are both out injured (Dawidowicz for the season due to a knee injury), and will likely be replaced by Nicolo Casale and Giangiacomo Magnani. On the bright side, their vital attacker Antonin Barak will be back in the lineup after sitting out the match against Venezia.
Verona predicted XI: Montipo; Casale, Magnani, Ceccherini; Faraoni, Tameze, Veloso, Lazovic; Barak, Caprari; Simeone.
Atalanta team news
Atalanta must contend with a crushing midweek defeat in the Champions League. After conceding three times in the opening hour of a must-win group stage finale against Villarreal, Atalanta could only claw back two prior to the final whistle, and were thus relegated to the Europa League.
Domestically, however, Atalanta are the hottest team in Serie A, having won five straight in the league. Even more impressively, they are unbeaten in fourteen consecutive league matches away from home. They enter play on Sunday in fourth place, two points behind Napoli in third place, and three behind Inter in second. Their recent streak has impressed, with away wins against Juventus and Napoli, and a 4-0 home win over Venezia.
Atalanta will be without wing-back Robin Gosens and attacking midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi, Verona’s shorthanded defence, combined with their aggressive, free-flowing style – bolstered by the presence of top scorers Mario Pasalic and Duvan Zapata – suggest the free-scoring Lombardy side will find their way onto score sheet. Of course, Atalanta’s defence, while hardly a disaster, is no fortress, and will present opportunities for Verona.
Atalanta predicted XI: Musso; Toloi, Demiral, Djimsiti; Zappacosta, Freuler, De Roon, Maehle; Pessina, Pasalic; Duvan Zapata
Serie A 2021/22 recent form:
- Verona: DWLDW
- Atalanta: WWWWW
Scoreline prediction: Verona 1-3 Atalanta.
On the heels of a gutting defeat that ended their Champions League campaign, Atlanta are sure to be stinging. However, they return to Serie A, where they’ve won five straight, the with designs on the top of the table. They will allow chances, but a shorthanded Verona defence is unlikely to slow their potent attack. Look for Atlanta to shake off the midweek hangover.
