It’s an all-American affair as Madison Keys goes head-to-head with the legendary Venus Williams in the first round of the Canadian Open in Montreal.

Keys, who was knocked out at the quarter-final stage for the third consecutive tournament on Friday when she lost 3-6,3-6 to Maria Sakkari in Washington DC, will be hoping to go one step further this time around and reach the final, just like she did in 2016, when she lost in straight sets to Simona Halep. The world number 16 has won five of her last six matches against her fellow Americans, including a straight set win against Coco Gauff in Eastbourne and will be confident of making it six from her last seven.

Venus Williams, meanwhile, has lost three of her four matches since she returned from her five month break in June, including a first round straight sets defeat to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina at Wimbledon, where had a nasty looking fall on the grass. The 43-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent years, failing to win back-to-back matches at any tournament in 2021,2022 or 2023.

This will be the sixth meeting between the pair, with Keys currently leading the head-to-head 3-2.
