The 2021/22 La Liga campaign gets underway on Friday with Valencia hosting Getafe at 8pm (UK time).
Neither side will have been happy with their finishes last season, both ending the bottom half of the table, closer to relegation than the European places.

Valencia vs Getafe build-up & previous line-ups:
Just two seasons ago Valencia were contesting in the Champions League, topping their group ahead of the likes of Chelsea, Ajax and Lille, but Los Che have been slowly falling down the table and finished 13th last season. Then managed by Javi Gracia (and Voro as interim to close the campaign), Valencia were just nine points clear of the relegation zone, and a massive 15 from Villarreal in what would have been the Europa Conference League spot (before the Yellow Submarine won the Europa League). This summer, Valencia have appointed Jose Bordalas to try to lift them up the table, but the 57-year-old has a big first competitive match.
Bordalas joined Valencia from Getafe, leaving the club after a five-year spell, with Michel coming in to replace him. Like Valencia, Getafe had a poor 2020/21, finishing in 15th and just four points clear of relegation, the first time they had dropped into the bottom half since their promotion in 2017/18 – having achieved eighth twice either side of a fifth-placed finish. Michel’s pre-season preparations at his new club have been good, with five wins and two draws from their seven friendlies, including a 2-0 win over Premier League side Brighton.
- Valencia (vs Brentford): Rivero; Menargues, Diakhaby, Guillamon, Vazquez; Jason, Burlamaqui, Esquerdo; Lopez, Sobrino, Vallejo.
- Getafe (vs Brighton): David Soria, Djene, Cabaco, Miguel, Alena, Sandro, Duro, Olivera, Arambarri, Suarez, Timor.

History shines on Getafe against Valencia
In taking Getafe’s manager from them over the summer, Valencia will undoubtedly be hoping they have also removed their opponents’ recent dominance in this fixture.
Valencia have won just one of their past 10 La Liga meetings with Getafe, losing four and drawing five. Eight of those 10 matches came with Bordalas in charge of Getafe, with the only defeat during that run taking place in November 2018, a 1-0 victory for Valencia away from home.
Getafe are also unbeaten in their last five away La Liga matches against Valencia, their longest run away from home against them in the Spanish top flight, though they have only won once with four draws.
