Valencia take on 19th-placed Elche on Saturday at 5.30pm (UK time) in a proverbial six-pointer for La Liga safety.

Javi Gracia’s side are perched precariously in 14th and a defeat on Saturday would see relegation-threatened Elche move level on points with Los Che, blowing the relegation battle wide open.

Valencia vs Elche build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

It has been a difficult season for Valencia, who remain just two points outside the drop zone and could be dragged into serious relegation trouble if Elche collect maximum reward this weekend. Gracia must avoid defeat, but his side come into this contest off the back of a debilitating 3-0 loss to Sevilla in midweek.

The Green-striped ones meanwhile may be stationed in the relegation zone, but Jorge Almiron’s side have two games in hand on those around them, including Valencia, and will feel confident heading into this game, having sealed a 2-0 win at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero in the reverse fixture back in autumn.

  • Valencia (vs Sevilla): Sabater; Wass, Gabriel, Guillamon, Lato; Koindredi, Racic, Lee, Jason, Blanco; Sobrino.
  • Elche (vs Barcelona): Badia; Barragan, Gonzalo, Gonzalez, Mojica; Marcone, Guti, Rodriguez, Rigoni, Fernandez; Boye.

Jasper Cillessen remains the only long-term absentee for Gracia, who is expected to make wholesale changes from the side battered by Sevilla in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday evening. For the visitors, they have a clean bill of health heading to the Mestalla.

Players to watch:

  • Valencia: Of those allowed to leave by Valencia in the summer, one player they were desperate to keep hold of was Jose Gaya. The buccaneering left-back has most recently drawn links to Barcelona, and with good reason. This season alone he has registered a club-best four assists in La Liga, providing more assists in 2020/21 (four in 17 appearances) than in his two previous terms combined (two assists in 59 games). The 25-year-old will be aiming to maintain that creative purple patch to help Valencia stave off the threat of relegation.
  • Elche: Fidel has scored in two of his four La Liga appearances against Valencia, but is yet to find the back of the net at the Mestalla. The 31-year-old is Elche’s most productive player this term with six direct contributions (four goals, two assists), including the second in his side’s 2-1 win over Valencia back in October. If Almiron’s men are to pull off an unexpected double over Los Che, then they will need Fidel to break his Mestalla duck and follow on from his excellent display in the first instalment of this Valencian derby.
