Back in the EuroLeague after a year in the second-tier EuroCup, Valencia had a poor start to the campaign losing back to back games against Baskonia and LDLC ASVEL, the latter a 77-76 defeat courtesy of Jonah Mathews’ free throw in the final two seconds. They then claimed a big scalp to get their first win of the season, beating defending champions Anadolu Efes thanks to a final-quarter comeback.
Valencia couldn’t build on that victory, losing narrowly to Fenerbahce who were perfect at the time, but it appears they could confidence from that defeat. For the first time this season, Valencia strung together two wins in the EuroLeague, first beating ALBA Berlin before a 83-82 victory over Olympiacos last time out having entered the final quarter down by 12 points.
Monaco, meanwhile, are very much enjoying themselves with just Fenerbahce above them in the table after six games played. The French league side opened the campaign, and their second consecutive season in the EuroLeague, with a 83-66 victory over Virtus Bologna and followed that up by beating defending champions Anadolu Efes in overtime.
They couldn’t make it three wins a row though, losing against Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, giving up a seven-point lead going into the final quarter. But Monaco didn’t allow themselves to get bogged down by that, bouncing back to win their past three matches. The run included back-to-back wins over Greek sides Panathinaikos and Olympiacos and last time out they secured a fifth victory of the season, beating Crvena zvezda 85-77.
