USA vs Haiti build-up & previous line-ups:

The hosts and pre-tournament favourites had no troubles in their 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League group as they claimed full points (9) while registering 15 goals. Gregg Berhalter’s side boasted a mean defence having conceded just three strikes. This current crop of Stars and Stripes players have a lot to live up to. Across 15 previous Gold Cup editions the United States, who are six-time winners, failed to reach the final on four separate occasions and if we break down those disappointing performances they include two bronze medals (1996 and 2003), a fourth place finish (2015) and quarter-final exit (2000).

Things were not as straightforward for Haiti, who entered the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification tournament that determined the final three nation’s for this summer’s championship. Les Grenadiers made light work of it, though, swatting aside Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (6-1) in the first round before securing qualification through a 4-1 win over Bermuda. It subsequently meant they reached a seventh Gold Cup finals, with the last edition being their best run. Marc Collat’s side made a first semi-final appearance but lost to Mexico after extra-time, and this new group will be hoping to at least match those efforts.

Player to watch: Matthew Hoppe (USA)

After becoming the second American to lift the Champions League trophy many looked forward to seeing Christian Pulisic at this summer’s Gold Cup finals. But given the proximity of the championship and the new European club season the Chelsea forward will instead be sitting it out. His absence presents an opportunity for an unlikely hero to step up. And that individual could be 20-year-old centre-forward Matthew Hoppe, who like Pulisic before him is spending his formative years playing in Germany. Though given the considerable interest for his signature, that may not be the case for much longer. Hoppe earlier this year became the first American to net a Bundesliga hat-trick and following Schalke’s ignominious relegation is reportedly being tracked by Tottenham, Newcastle United and Southampton. Hoppe’s first appearance at the Gold Cup will be his international debut. Could we soon be witnessing the rise of the next USMNT superstar?
