Union Berlin and Mainz 05 are both chasing a first Bundesliga win since February when they meet this week.

It was a disastrous matchday 27 for the pair who suffered humbling losses to Hertha and RB Leipzig respectively. Union were beaten 4-0 by their Berlin rivals while Mainz shipped five without a reply against Leipzig. As things stand, just three points separate the sides, with Union sitting two places above Mainz.

Union Berlin & Mainz’s previous line-ups:

Union Berlin (vs Hertha Berlin): Gikiewicz; Friedrich, Hubner, Parensen; Trimmel, Reichel, Promel, Andrich, Bulter, Ingvartsen, Andersson.

Mainz (vs RB Leipzig): Müller; Bruma, St. Juste, Niakhaté; Baku, Kunde, Fernandes, Martín; Boëtius, Quaison; Onisiwo.

Urs Fischer is likely to make a few changes from his starting lineup last time out — forward Anthony Ujah, in particular, is an option. Danny Latza, who has come off the bench in Mainz’s last two games, is expected to start meaning Pierre Kunde or Edimilson Fernandes will drop out.

Players to watch:

Union Berlin: Union Berlin are struggling in front of goal. No team inside the Bundesliga top 15 has scored fewer (32) and they go into this contest with just one strike across their last three league matches. It’s hard to see where the next effort is going to come from, but chances are Sebastian Andersson will be involved — he’s bagged 11 goals to date and was their last scorer, netting in a 3-1 defeat at Freiburg.

Mainz: Achim Beierlorzer needs to pick up his team after they were humbled 0-5 at home by RB Leipzig and key to their cause may very well be the reintroduction of skipper Danny Latza into midfield. He’s already missed a chunk of the season due to injury and has played a combined 23 minutes since the Bundesliga return.
