Godfrey’s England U21 teammate Ryan Sessegnon has taken a plunge into the unknown by relocating to the Bundesliga for a season-long loan move with Hoffenheim. Having failed to cement a consistent starting berth in north London following his move from Fulham last summer, Sessegnon will now look to gain some much-needed experience and minutes at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena.

The Parisians have bolstered their midfield with the signing of Danilo Pereira on loan from Porto for the season, with the club holding an option to make his temporary move a permanent one. The 29-year-old has long been linked with a move to one of Europe’s ultra elite clubs, and that has now materialised.

Of course Monchi was going to be active on deadline day. Sevilla have swooped for AZ winger Idrissi for a fee believed to be around £10m. The 24-year-old Morocco international scored 13 goals and registered three assists in the Eredivisie last season and will now be making his first venture outside of the Netherlands, having progressed through the Groningen academy before joining AZ in 2018.

Also through the door at the Allianz Arena is Douglas Costa, who has returned to Bayern two years after he left the club for Juventus permanently. The Brazilian has joined initially on loan, and one would think that puts an end to Bayern’s last-minute interest in Callum Hudson-Odoi from Chelsea.

Quite the coup for Ajax. The former Everton flop reinvented himself and rejuvenated his reputation in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen and has now returned to Amsterdam for a fee in the region of £10m. The 27-year-old has signed a contract until 2024, and becomes the club’s 10th signing this summer. Klaassen will return to Merseyside this season as Ajax drew Liverpool in the Champions League group stages, and Everton fans will be certainly be keeping a close eye on that fixture.
Key stat: Davy Klaassen registered more assists (5) and created more chances (40) than any other Werder Bremen player in the Bundesliga last season.

Julian Nagelsmann has strengthened his ranks with the signing of Justin Kluivert, son of Patrick, on loan from Roma for the season. Kluivert made just 19 starts in Serie A last season, scoring four goals and registering one assist.

It’s been a busy day for the European champions, who have also snapped up Bouna Sarr from Olympique Marseille. Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has detailed exactly what the 28-year-old will bring to the club, telling the club’s official website: “Bouna Sarr is a dynamic right-back who fits in very well with the way we approach our game.
“He’ll help us in an important position. At 28, he brings stability and experience to the table, and we also believe that he’ll develop further at FC Bayern.”

Tiemoue Bakayoko
From: Chelsea
To: Napoli (loan)
Another Premier League midfielder on the move is Tiemoue Bakayoko, who has once again relocated to Serie A on loan for the season. The Frenchman spent the 2018/19 campaign at AC Milan, where he made 42 appearances for the San Siro club. He then had a stint at Monaco last campaign and has now completed a move to the San Paolo Stadium.

Another loan move! This time the Old Lady have snapped up Fiorentina favourite Federico Chiesa for the season. The 19-capped Italy international, son of Enrico Chiesa, has completed a two-year loan move with the option to buy, and ends years of speculation linking the incisive winger to Turin.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has addressed the defensive frailties in his side by completing a move for Brazilian full-back Alex Telles from Porto. The 27-year-old has joined the Red Devils for a fee of £13.6m plus £1.8m in add-ons and will bring direct competition at left-back for Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams.
Key stat: Alex Telles registered the most assists in the Primeira Liga last season of any defender (8).

La Viola weren’t standing around following Chiesa’s departure by securing the services of free agent Jose Callejon who recently ended a seven-year association with Napoli where he chipped in with 82 goals across 349 appearances in all competitions. The former Real Madrid forward will be hoping to rediscover his mojo after failing to reach double figures in each of the previous two Serie A seasons.

They say never go back, though in the case of Dutch centre-back Wesley Hoedt returning to familiar surroundings could be what he needs at this stage of his career, a forgotten man at Southampton — where he’s made 41 league appearances — the Alkmaar-born defender spent the last two seasons on loan at Celta Vigo and Royal Antwerp, ultimately suggesting there’s no long-term future for him on the south coast even though his present deal expires in June 2022. For the time being it’s a temporary return to former club Lazio.

Talks between Man Utd and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani were positive leading up to deadline day and both parties successfully crossed the line, the former PSG marksman signing a one-year deal (with an option for a further 12 months), and in the process taking possession of United’s fabled number 7 jersey. This move has come at a perfect time for manager Solskjaer, who saw Anthony Martial sent off over the weekend for violent conduct and will now be without the Frenchman for three matches after the international break, which includes back-to-back home matches against Chelsea and Arsenal.
Key stat: Edinson Cavani is PSG’s all-time top scorer with 200 goals.
Potential deals to keep an eye on
Thomas Partey to Arsenal
The Gunners have kept up their interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey. According to Sky Sports, the Londoners are now expected to meet Atleti’s £45m asking price, as Mikel Atreta seeks midfield reinforcements. Lucas Torreira is set to join Diego Simeone’s side on loan in a separate deal, while outcast Matteo Guendouzi is also close to joining Hertha Berlin on loan. With the duo heading for the exit doors, the signing of Partey would really beef up Arteta’s squad.
Bundesliga round-up
The Bundesliga has now officially shut, but which deadline day moves that we were expecting came off, and which did not?
Done deals:
- Ryan Sessegnon (from Spurs to Hoffenheim, loan)
- Sebastian Rudy (from Schalke 04 to Hoffenheim, loan)
- Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (from PSG to Bayern Munich, free transfer)
- Arne Maier (from Hertha Berlin to Arminia Bielefeld, loan)
- Douglas Costa (from Juventus to Bayern Munich, loan)
- Simon Falette (Frankfurt to Hannover, undisclosed fee)
- Davy Klaassen (from Werder Bremen to Ajax, £10m)
- Bouna Sarr (from Marseille to Bayern Munich, £9m)
- Kilian Ludewig (from Red Bull Salzburg to Schalke 04, loan)
- Frederik Winther (from Lyngby to Augsburg, undisclosed fee)
- Omar Alderete (from Basel to Hertha Berlin, £3m)
- Prince Osei Owusu (from Arminia Bielefeld to Paderborn, undisclosed fee)
Failed moves:
- Late interest in Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi from Bayern remained just that as the Bavarians snapped up Costa instead.
- Sead Kolasinac looked destined to seal a move to Bayer Leverkusen, but the Arsenal defender is now set to stay in north London.
