Tottenham Hotspur will look to keep their faint Champions League qualification hopes alive when they host Sheffield United on Sunday at 7:15pm (UK time).

Spurs currently sit seventh in the table, five points adrift of Chelsea in fourth and only one ahead of Everton in eighth having played a game more than the Toffees. The Lilywhites’ poor form this season has resulted in the sacking of Jose Mourinho, who has been replaced by Ryan Mason on an interim basis. The former midfielder was able to guide his side to a 2-1 victory over Southampton in his first game in charge, but Spurs were overpowered by Manchester City in the EFL Cup final last weekend.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, are already relegated but, as is often the case, are now playing with a little more freedom and were even able to inflict a damaging 1-0 defeat on Brighton last time out, offering no help to the Seagulls’ survival cause. The Blades have taken just two points from their four Premier League away games at Tottenham over the years, but haven’t lost twice to the North Londoners in the same campaign since 1975/76.

Mason: Tottenham have five more “cup finals” to come this season

Spurs might have lost their showcase clash with Man City in the EFL Cup last weekend, but Mason insists his side have five more cup finals to come between now and the end of the season.

Tottenham are desperately chasing London rivals, Chelsea, in the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot, but with the two sides separated by five points with just 15 left to play for, Mason is well aware that there is no margin for error. Spurs’ must begin their task with a professional performance against an already relegated Sheffield United side this weekend.

“We’ve got five cup finals. This weekend is a massive game for this football club,” said Mason. “It’s important that we have the right mentality because it’s not easy to win games in the Premier League.

“We’ve had a week to prepare and a week to train, a week to work the players and come Sunday it’s a massive game for us as a group and as a football club.

“The biggest priority at the moment for the players is the weekend. That’s the priority. We can’t look past anyone, especially in the Premier League.

“Tottenham Hotspur want to be competing on the biggest stages, we want to have something in place that allows us to do that. This weekend is a massive game for this football club.”

Spurs’ ability to reach the Champions League will hinge largely on the performances of Harry Kane between now and the end of the season. The England international has been widely praised for his creative exploits this season after notching a league-high 13 assists so far, but he’s also one goal clear of Mohamed Salah at the top of the scoring charts and is on course for a third Premier League Golden Boot.

Kane has often been linked with a move away from Spurs and speculation has only intensified with Tottenham struggling to compete with the Premier League’s best this season. As such, many believe his future at the club depends on their ability to finish in the top four. Mason, however, doesn’t believe it’s that black and white.

“I don’t think so,” Mason responded when asked if Kane’s future depends on Champions League qualification.

“Harry Kane loves this football club. That’s been proven over the last seven or eight years. He’s one of the best strikers in the world. Everyone knows that, we know that and I’d like to think Harry knows that as well.

“The most important thing right now, and our attention right now, is this weekend. We can’t disrespect any opponent and we can’t be investing our energy into anything else.

“That’s all I have to say on the matter. Our attention, Harry’s attention, the attention of this whole football club is on this Sunday.”
