Toni Kroos has bracketed Fede Valverde among the “top three in the world right now”

Toni Kroos has hailed Real Madrid team-mate Fede Valverde among the “top three in the world right now” after his goal in Sunday’s 3-1 Clasico win over arch-rivals Barcelona.

The midfielder-cum-forward has made a blistering start to the campaign, which culminated in doubling Real’s advantage against Barca over the weekend as Carlo Ancelotti secured an important derby-day victory.

Karim Benzema broke the deadlock after only 12 minutes, before Valverde uncorked a thunderous low drive past Marc-Andre ter Stegen, letting loose from the edge of the box. Ferran Torres reduced the deficit late on, but a 91st-minute Rodrygo penalty confirmed all three points for Real.

That result has just given the current Spanish champions a three-point advantage over their eternal rivals in the early La Liga title race. It was also Xavi’s first defeat in the league this season as Los Blancos remain unbeaten, winning eight of their nine matches so far.

Kroos was also heavily involved in La Liga’s pre-eminent fixture, playing the full 90 minutes as he locked down the midfield with Aurelien Tchouameni and Luka Modric. But it was only Valverde whom he was inspired to speak out about.

The World Cup winner wrote on his Twitter account: “Fede Valverde top 3 in the world right now”.

Real will now look to consolidate their standing atop La Liga when they visit the Manuel Martinez Valero on Wednesday night, taking on bottom club Elche.
