Sixteenth seed Tommy Paul will be looking to make the third round of the French Open for the first ever time when he faces Nicolas Jarry on Thursday. The American is competing at Roland Garros for the fifth-straight year but the four previous occasions saw Paul losing in either the first or second rounds (twice each).
However, Paul did have a good start to the year with regards to Grand Slams, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, only losing out to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. Paul had a relatively straightforward victory in the first round of the French Open, beating Lucky Loser Dominic Stricker 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
Although he is unseeded for the French Open, Jarry only just missed out, lifting himself up to 35th in the world just before the tournament and he’ll be hoping to climb up a bit more with a good run at Roland Garros. However, Jarry doesn’t normally perform well at the French Open, with this being his best run in the competition.
Previously, there have been three first-round exits for Jarry at Roland Garros and two where he didn’t make it out of qualifying, including last year as he made a return from a suspension. But Jarry did finally make it past the first round at Roland Garros this year, beating Hugo Dellien 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
