Heading into Roland Garros there’s a semblance of momentum on Karolina Pliskova’s side. The former world number one enjoyed a strong Strasbourg campaign; after winning just two matches since her season began in March, the Czech reached the semis before bowing out. Given her delayed start this will be her first Grand Slam tournament this year and Pliskova will be looking to recreate her 2021 form where she reached a Wimbledon final and US Open quarterfinal berth. Pliskova also enjoys an impressive 7-3 opening round record in the French capital, that being said, she’s reached the second week just once (a semifinal appearance in 2017).
This will be Tessah Andrianjafitrimo’s first home slam appearance since 2017 when she was eliminated in the first round. Andrianjafitrimo received a lucky loser opportunity to compete at this level after losing a Morocco Open final to compatriot Kristina Mladenovic (6-3, 3-6, 7-6) in a three-hour affair last week. This will be her fifth attempt to reach the second round in a tour event. Two of those efforts came at Roland Garros where she was eliminated by Wang Qiang (6-0, 6-0) in 2016, and Francoise Abanda (6-3, 6-4) in 2017. This will be the first meeting between Andrianjafitrimo and Pliskova with the latter having never lost a slam contest to a player ranked outside the top 100 since a defeat to Shelby Rogers in the first round of the 2016 French Open.
