Taro Daniel will be hoping to make the main draw of Wimbledon for just the second time in five years as he finishes qualifying this week. While Daniel has never been considered among the best, you’ll normally see the Japanese star among the early rounds of the Grand Slams, with seven-straight appearances since missing Wimbledon in 2021. Of those seven tournaments, Daniel has made it past the first round on three occasions, including at the Australian and French Opens this year.

Daniel didn’t need to go through qualifying for Wimbledon last year, but this time around he is the fourth seed and has to face three matches to secure his spot in the main draw. In the first qualifying round, there was a straight-set victory over Marco Trungelliti and last time out it was a 6-3, 6-3 win against Luca Nardi. There’s just one more round to go.

Hoping to end Daniel’s run is Belgian Kimmer Coppejans, who has never made it to the main draw of Wimbledon. A regular in qualifying at Grand Slams, 29-year-old Coppejans has actually only made it to the first round three times from 26 appearances. At Wimbledon, Coppejans has already bettered his best showing with four previous exits in the first round of qualifying.

There were also first qualifying round exits at the Australian and French Opens this year, but seeded Timofey Skatov was beaten in the first round at Wimbledon, thanks to a tiebreak win in the third set. Things were a bit more straight forward last time out as fellow Belgian Zizou Bergs was dispatched 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Prediction: Taro Daniel in straight sets
