Swansea vs Southampton build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
After suffering heartbreak in last season’s playoffs, Swansea will be looking to go one better this time around by earning promotion back to the Premier League. The Welsh side have won both their pre-season friendlies so far, beating Plymouth Argyle and Forest Green Rovers 2-1, but Southampton will represent their biggest challenge of the summer by far. What’s more, Swansea are still distracted by the search for Steve Cooper’s successor after the manager left the club earlier in July.
After starting like a house on fire, Southampton fell apart during the second half of last season and in the end, will have been grateful to finish 15th. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men got their pre-season off to the best possible start with a 4-0 thrashing of Cardiff City last time out. They’ll be looking to do a Welsh double here before facing some tough Spanish opposition to round off their preparations for the new Premier League campaign.
- Swansea (vs Forest Green Rovers): Hamer; Naughton, Cabango, Bennett, Bidwell; Walsh, Smith, Dhanda; Piroe, Lowe, Cooper.
- Southampton (vs Cardiff City): Forster; Valery, Stephens, Salisu, Perraud; Walcott, Diallo, Romeu, Elyounoussi; Obafemi, Ings.
Ryan Manning and Jay Fulton remain doubts for Swansea while the injured duo of Stuart Armstrong and James Ward-Prowse are likely to remain sidelined for Southampton. After netting a brace from the bench against Cardiff, Scotland international Che Adams could start here for the Saints.
Player to watch: Che Adams (Southampton)
Che Adams was unable to help Scotland relish their first appearance back at a major tournament since 1998, registering just one shot on target across three appearances as Steve Clarke’s men crashed out in the group stages.
However, that early exit gave Adams the chance to get some much-needed rest, clearly something he’s benefitted from if his brace from the bench against Cardiff was anything to go by.
Adams was second only to Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse among Saints players for Premier League goals and assists last season, bagging nine and five respectively, and he’ll be looking for an even more effective campaign this time around to push Southampton closer to the top half of the table.
