Joel Piroe honoured by Ruud van Nistelrooy comparisons
Swansea have won just two of their 11 Championship matches so far this season and there hasn’t been too much for fans to cheer about under Russell Martin, who was appointed after what felt like a drawn out saga following Steve Cooper’s departure with the likes of John Eustace and Jody Morris also linked.
However, another summer arrival has had fans happy, with new signing Joel Piroe scoring five goals in his opening 10 Championship games – more than any other Swansea player combined (only Jamie Paterson and Olivier Ntcham have found the net for the Swans, totalling four goals). Piroe has been responsible for Swansea’s two league victories so far, netting the only goals in 1-0 wins over Bristol City and Huddersfield Town.
The 22-year-old’s name will have also played a part in the fans warming to them, as it fits so smoothly into ‘No Piroe, no party’ but those who had watched Piroe in the past won’t be surprised about his fast start in England. Coming through the ranks at PSV Eindhoven, Piroe was compared to legendary Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had coached him at U19s level. And rather than be starstruck, or push away the comparisons, Piroe used his time with Van Nistelrooy as motivation.
“It’s a big honour to be mentioned in the same sentence as van Nistelrooy,” he told BBC Sport Wales of the historic comparisons.
“When I first saw him at the training ground at PSV, I wanted to ask him so many questions because he knows what it’s like to play in the biggest league, in the biggest games.
“As a striker you always have to be calm. He was like that – everyone wants to be like that.”
