Stuttgart vs Wolfsburg build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

13 points now separate Stuttgart from the relegation playoff spot and Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side can now consider themselves absolutely safe. Now, it’s all about climbing as high up the table as possible and with just four points separating them from Borussia Monchengladbach in seventh, there is plenty of incentive to keep standards high for Stuttgart.

Wolfsburg, meanwhile, are so close to finishing in the Champions League places. Glasner’s side are fourth in the Bundesliga, five points clear of Borussia Dortmund in fifth with just five games to go, while they’re only two adrift of Eintracht Frankfurt above them with a game in hand. However, Wolfsburg head into this match on the back of consecutive defeats to fellow top-four sides Bayern Munich (3-2) and Eintracht Frankfurt (4-3). Improvements are needed if they’re to avoid blowing their impressively high finish.

  • Stuttgart (vs Union Berlin): Kobel; Mavropanos*, Anton, Kaminski; Stenzel, Endo, Karazor, Thommy; Coulibaly, Didavi; Kalajdzic.
  • Wolfsburg (vs Bayern Munich): Casteels; Mbabu, Lacroix, Brooks, Otavio; Gerhardt, Schalger; Baku, Philipp, Victor; Weghorst.

Nicolas Gonzalez, Orel Mangala, Hamadi Al Ghaddioui, Clinton Mola and Silas Wamangituka make up a lengthy injury list for Stuttgart, while Konstantinos Mavraopanos is suspended and Lilian Egloff is a fitness doubt.

Paulo Otavio and Kevin Mbabu are both suspended for Wolfsburg, while Renato Steffen is also sidelined. Jerome Roussillon, Joshua Guilavogui and Admir Mehmedi are doubts.

Player to watch: John Brooks (Wolfsburg)

Wolfsburg have conceded seven goals across their last two games in a run which is completely out of character for Die Wölfe this season. Only RB Leipzig (23) have conceded fewer than Wolfsburg’s 29 Bundesliga goals in 2020/21 and Glasner’s men need to restore that defensive solidity if they’re to confirm their top-four spot.

American centre-back John Brooks will play a critical role in restoring defensive calm. The 28-year-old is first among his Wolfsburg teammates when it comes to clearances (114) and aerial duels won (86) while only defensive partner Maxence Lacroix (54) has made more interceptions (51).

What’s more, Brooks’ supreme ability on the ball allows Wolfsburg to restore calm in the most tumultuous moments, while also turning defence into attack in an instance with accurate passes through opposition lines.

Brooks will play a key role in getting his side back to winning ways on Wednesday.
