It feels as though Stefanos Tsitsipas has been among the upper rankings in the men’s tennis world for quite some time, but he is still searching his first Grand Slam win. Although he reached his only major final at the 2021 French Open, it’s in Australia that Tsitsipas has had more consistent success.
The Greek has reached the semi-finals in three of the past four Australian Opens, beaten by Rafael Nadal in 2019 and then Daniil Medvedev twice, with all ending up as the losing finalists. In the first round this year, third-seed Tsitsipas was pit against Frenchman Quentin Halys and cruised to a straight-set victory, winning 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
His opponent in the second round is wildcard Rinky Hijikata, the hometown boy looking to cause an upset. This is his first appearance in the actual Australian Open, having fallen at the qualifying stages the past four years. It was also just his second appearance at a Grand Slam (excluding qualifiers) having made it to the first round of the US Open last year.
Hijikata went up against qualifier Yannick Hanfmann in the first round and came from two sets down to claim his first Grand Slam win, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
