Stan Wawrinka turned back the clock when booking a place in today’s second round. The former champion won a five-set marathon against Albert Ramos Vinolas which totalled four hours and 35 minutes. Wawrinka, ranked 89 in the world, triumphed 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 6-7 (2-7) 1-6 6-4. “It’s one of the big reasons why I keep playing is to relive those emotions,” he said afterwards.

“I think it was special today again to be here, a lot of support, a lot of fans here. It helped me a lot to stay in the match and to keep fighting for it. I always try to make it special, try to have a connection with the people, with the fans, because as I say, it’s one of the main reasons why I keep playing and I want to enjoy it as much as possible.”

This meeting also represents the first time Wawrinka and Thanasi Kokkinakis have faced off on the ATP tour since a notorious war of words controversy ignited by Kokkinakis’ compatriot Nick Kyrgios back in 2015. It also marks their first-ever showdown on the court.

Kokkinakis, now ranked 108, earlier this week secured a first main-draw win at Roland Garros since 2015 when he emerged triumphant against Nikoloz Basilashvili and Bernard Tomic to reach the third round. In fact, throughout his career, the Australian has enjoyed limited success on clay, winning two or more main-draw matches in such tournaments on two previous occasions (2015 French Open and 2022 Geneva Open).

Prediction: Stan Wawrinka in four sets
