We’re into the third round of the 2023 Indian Wells Masters and we’ve already seen a few big names fall. Stan Wawrinka is one of those still in the tournament, qualifying with a protected ranking, and he’ll be looking to continue his run having missed the past two showings at Indian Wells – last taking part in 2019.
The Swiss superstar started the tournament with a three-set victory over qualifier Aleksandar Vukic in the first round, but things were slightly more straightforward last time out. Up against Miomir Kecmanovic, Wawrinka dispatched the 26th-seed in two sets, winning 7-6 (8), 6-4 to reach the third round for a ninth time. Wawrinka is a one-time finalist as a singles competitor at Indian Wells, losing to compatriot Roger Federer in the 2017 final. Incidentally, Wawrinka also lost in the doubles tournament final in 2011, when he was partnered by Federer.
Holger Rune will be the man looking to end Wawrinka’s run and the seventh-seed has been climbing up the rankings of late. Rune still hasn’t made it past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam, and bowed out in the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year, but the Dane has success in the ATP Masters 1000 circuit.
Last year he won the Paris Masters and he had already matched his best showing at Indian Wells before playing a single ball. Given a bye into the second round as one of the seeded players, Rune ensured he has gone further in 2023 than he has at Indian Wells before by beating Mackenzie McDonald 7-5, 6-3 in his first match.
