Sporting vs Portimonense build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
The Portuguese title has been swapped between Porto and Benfica for some time now but Sporting are looking very likely to end that duopoly and win their first championship since 2001/02 (also the last time a team other than Porto and Benfica won the league). Sporting have been practically perfect in the league this season, dropping just six points from their opening 19 games so far (three draws) while they have only lost two games across all competitions.
In the league, Sporting have won their past five games following a 1-1 draw with Rio Ave last month, scoring nine goals and conceding just once, taking advantage of the poor form of their supposed title challengers.
For Portimonense this season has had a different objective: staying in the Primeira Liga. As things stand they are on course to achieve their goal, currently 12th, but things are so tight in the bottom half of the table. That 10-point gap between Sporting and Porto in first and second is the same as the distance between seventh-placed Santa Clara and bottom.
Portimonense are just three points outside the relegation play-off place and it wasn’t too long ago that they were bottom of the table. Two wins and two draws in their past six league games have lifted them, but Paulo Sergio will be wary of dropping back down if results don’t go their way this weekend.
- Sporting (vs Pacos de Ferreira): Adan; Goncalo Inacio, Feddal, Coates; Porro, Palhinha, Mario, Mendes; Pedro Goncalves, Tiago Tomas; Paulinho.
- Portimonense (vs Gil Vicente): Samuel; Moufi, Possignolo, Antonio, Anzai; Ewerton, Willyan Rocha, Dener; Boa Morte, Moreira, Salmani.
Sporting came through their game with Pacos de Ferreira unscathed and have a fully-fit squad to choose from, but Lucas Fernandes, Pedro Sa and Ricardo Ferreira are expected to be missing for Portimonense.
Player to watch: Pedro Goncalves (Sporting CP)
You could be forgiven for thinking Sporting would suffer following the departure of Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United last year, but they have only thrived, thanks to the arrival of Pedro Goncalves.
The former Wolves winger signed from Famalicao in the summer and has already become such an important player for Sporting and their push for the league title. In 17 league games so far this season, the Portugal U21 international has scored 14 goals and recorded two assists, and is the only player to reach double figures for goals in the Primeira Liga.
His devastating form has come through the middle but Goncalves is capable of playing across the attacking line and has been used as such, popping up on the wings when required. Now, Goncalves is on his joint-worst goalscoring form in the league, going two games without finding the net. After a blank on debut against Portimonense earlier in the season, he’ll be hoping to end the drought this weekend and push Sporting closer to the title.
