Sporting vs SC Farense build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

With seven wins and two draws from their opening nine games, Sporting have been nearly perfect in their start to the domestic season as they look to win a first title since 2002.

They also boast the league’s best attack (23 goals tied with FC Porto) and second-best defence (seven conceded) with the former tally set to put Farense to the test.

The visitors head to Lisbon averaging 1.56 goals conceded per game, but they are enjoying a semblance of momentum having won last time out, though leaving Sporting empty-handed looks to be a foregone conclusion.

  • Sporting (vs CD Mafra): Maximiano; Borja, Inácio, Quaresma; Plata, Bragança, Nunes, Antunes; Tomás, Sporar, Gonçalves.
  • SC Farense (vs Marítimo): Defendi; Oudrhiri, Bura, Falcão, Nunes; Isidoro, Melo; Seco, Gauld, Aouacheria; Patrick.

Jovane Cabral, Nuno Mendes and Luiz Phellype are all expected to miss out for Sporting this weekend with respective injuries, though none are too serious. Farense, meanwhile, remain without Cesar Martins, Eduardo Mancha and Alex Pinto, while Djalma is yet to return to fitness.

Player to watch: Ryan Gauld (Farense)

It seems a lifetime ago when Ryan Gauld swapped Dundee United for the green pastures of Portuguese top-flight football.

A high-profile move to Sporting CP yielded just two league outings across five years and, since relocating to Farense, the 25-year-old Scottish midfielder has started to live up to his potential. He’s made nine Primeira Liga appearances this season registering three goals and creating four more subsequently making him Farense’s most valuable player.

Facing the side that once employed him will no doubt motivate him and if the visitors are to leave the nation’s capital with a result then Gauld needs to be heavily involved.
