Sporting CP vs Pacos Ferreira build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Following their latest victory, Sporting are now 18 games unbeaten in the Primeira Liga, opening up an eight-point gap between themselves and nearest rivals Porto as they seek to win a first league title since 2002.
Whether it’s grinding out a tough result or blowing sides away, Amorim’s men seem unstoppable right now, although it’ll be anything but straight-forward against Pacos Ferreira.
Pepa’s side only managed a 0-0 draw against Portimenese last time out but that ended a run of six consecutive league victories for Pacenses, who are now nine without defeat in Primeira Liga play since losing to Benfica in December.
Sitting just two points adrift of Benfica and Braga, and just five behind Porto, European qualification looks like a real possibility for Pacos Ferreira.
- Sporting CP (vs Gil Vicente): Adan; Neto, Coates, Feddal; Porro, Nunes, Palhinha, Antunes; Goncalves, Santos; Paulinho.
- Pacos Ferreira (vs Portimonense): Jordi; Fonseca, Marcelo, Baixinho, Rebocho; Eustaquio, Diaby, Carlos; Ferreira, Tanque, Singh.
Joao Mario returned to action from the bench against Gil Vicente last time out, but Nuno Mendes wasn’t fit enough to feature, although he is close to a return for the hosts. Meanwhile, Jorge Silva is still sidelined for the visitors, who have an otherwise fully fit squad to choose from.
Players to watch: Pedro Goncalves (Sporting CP)
Centre-back Sebastian Coates might have been the unlikely goalscoring hero last time out, netting twice late on as Sporting beat Gil Vicente 2-1, but there’s no doubting Pedro Goncalves has been the attacking star for the Lions this season. The 22-year-old midfielder has stepped brilliantly into the space vacated by Bruno Fernandes, notching 14 goals and two assists in 16 Primeira Liga games, making him the only Sporting player to score more than five league goals in 2020/21. He didn’t find the net against Gil Vicente, but he did net a brace to deliver a 2-0 win over Maritimo the game prior, ending a three-game goalless run, and Amorim will be counting on him to step up on Monday, too, in what is sure to be a tight match against an in-form Pacos Ferreira.
