Missteps atop the Serie A table have placed Inter’s league destiny in their own hands. Win out, and the title is theirs. On Friday afternoon (5:00pm UK), they make the relatively short journey south to square off against a Spezia side that’s playing out the string after all but cementing a spot in Serie A for next season.

Spezia team news

Though the job is not mathematically complete, Spezia have seemingly done enough to ensure not only Serie A football in 2022/23, but also to avoid the chore of dirtying their hands with a relegation battle down the stretch this season. Their last four games have yielded three results – two of them wins. That’s been good enough to not only leapfrog Sampdoria for 15th place (Spezia have 33 points; Sampdoria have 29), but also to put sizable gap between themselves and Cagliari (25 points) in the league’s last survival spot, and the two sides battling to crawl out of the drop zone, Venezia and Genoa, each of whom have just 22 points.

A home date against a top side, particularly on the eve of a weekend, is always going to be a spirited affair that brings out the fans and, as a result, a little extra motivation in the home side. However, given the gulf in quality between these sides, the possibility of a momentary ‘sigh of relief’ that’s almost inevitably coming for Spezia at some point, and Inter’s incredible motivation to win every remaining league game, it’s unlikely the home side rack up any more points in this one.

That being said, given Spezia’s clean bill of health, strong recent form and home pitch advantage, it wouldn’t be too surprising if the hosts kept this game close in the first half, with Inter’s quality taking over in the second half.

Spezia predicted XI: Provedel; Reca, Nikolaou, Erlic, Amian; Kiwior, Maggiore; Bastoni, Agudelo, Gyasi; Manaj

Inter Milan team news

Short of actually sitting atop the table, free and clear, it’s tough to imagine a situation more enviable than Inter’s. After a pair of mid-March draws seemingly eliminated them from the Serie A title race, crosstown rivals AC Milan (who assumed the top spot) and Napoli (who also temporarily leapfrogged Inter) have turned in consecutive draws (Milan) and an ill-timed home loss (Napoli, last time out, against Fiorentina) that have allowed Inter to not only crawl back into the race, but to assuming the driver’s seat!

Inter – who boast both Serie A’s most potent attack (65 goals scored) and its stingiest defense (just 24 conceded) – enter play on Friday afternoon two points behind Milan (who play at home against Genoa immediately after this game), and level on points (66) with Napoli. And the Nerazzuri have got a game in hand on each! If doesn’t paint a rosy enough picture for you, consider: just one of Inter seven remaining games in the league (April 24, at home against Roma) is against a top-half side. For good measure, the Nerazzurri have no notable injuries of which to speak, and only the final stages of the Coppa Italia (they face Milan in a semifinal second leg four days after this game) competing for their attention.

If you can’t be on top at this stage of the season, it’s not a bad place to be!

Inter Milan predicted XI: Handanovic; Dimarco, Rannochia, Skriniar; Perisic, Calhanoglu, Brozovic, Barella, Dumfries; Martinez, Dzeko

Serie A 2021/22 recent form:

  • Spezia: LWLWD
  • Inter Milan: WDDWW

Scoreline prediction: Spezia 0-2 Inter Milan

It’s tough to describe at the situation in which Simoni Inzaghi’s team finds itself as anything other than ‘envious’. That being said, we should expect Spezia to simply roll over for their guests. However, that being said, given the gulf in individual quality and (perhaps equally importantly) motivation, look for Inter to keep the heat on their crosstown rivals with a win.
