The final day of the 2019/20 Serie A season gets underway with SPAL hosting Fiorentina on Sunday at 5:00pm.
For hosts SPAL, it’s a farewell to Serie A. The club are already relegated and guaranteed to finish at the bottom of the table after three years in Italy‘s top-flight, having won promotion ahead of the 2017/18 campaign. Going into the final day, SPAL currently sit on 27 losses for the Serie A season and will want to avoid tying Pescara as the second-worst team in the division’s history when it comes to defeats within a single campaign.
Looking to send SPAL out of Serie A with another defeat are Fiorentina, who will also hope to finish in the top half and demonstrate progress after having gone so close to relegation last season. La Viola are currently 10th, ahead of Parma and Bologna due to their better head-to-head record, and can guarantee top half with a win to set a good foundation on which to build next season.

Fiorentina’s improvement on last season’s finish may give La Viola something to cheer but it still hasn’t been the best campaign for the club. Yet, one player who can be proud with what he has done is Federico Chiesa.
Grabbing a hat-trick in the win over Bologna, Chiesa took his total Serie A tally for the season to 10 goals. It is the first time he has hit the double figure mark, having only reached as high as sixth prior to this campaign. No Fiorentina player has scored more goals than Chiesa this season, with Dusan Vlahovic and Erick Pulgar closest with six each.
Adding on Chiesa’s five assists (a joint-team high) the Italian winger has been directly involved in 15 of Fiorentina’s 48 league goals this season, registering just under a third (31.25%). But on Sunday, Chiesa could be playing his final game for Fiorentina and be playing for a move, with the 22-year-old currently being linked to Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus.
As things stand, Chiesa currently has two years remaining on his Fiorentina contract and, following the win over Bologna, rebuffed claims he is unhappy at La Viola.
“They say I’m not happy to be in Florence? I will leave that to those who always look for negative things about this team. I dedicate this hat-trick to the real Fiorentina fans,” he said.
But Chiesa did go on to reveal he would be talking to Fiorentina about his future once the season was over on Sunday, adding: “My future is the match against SPAL, where I will try to improve my goalscoring record in Serie A, then I will talk to the club.
“There is a great relationship with the management and we will speak with the utmost serenity.”
