Spain come into the game on a monster 22-match unbeaten run, having not tasted defeat since the SheBelieves Cup back in March 2020 where they lost 1-0 to the USWNT. They haven’t lost a competitive game to European opposition since the 2019 World Cup, beaten 1-0 by Germany in the group stage.
By contrast, Finland haven’t had the best build up to Euro 2022, winning just one of their seven games this year, losing four times and drawing twice – though one of those draws did come against Brazil. This game will mark their return to the Euros having missed 2017’s tournament and they will hope to match their performance from 2005 when they made the semi-final before losing to eventual winners Germany.

Spain team news
Shortly after Spain announced their provisional squad for the Euros, Barcelona striker Jenni Hermoso had to pull out due to injury, a big blow but one they were expected to deal with as they still had 10 other players from the phenomenal Barcelona side that won all 36 domestic games this past season to complete a treble of La Liga, Copa de la Reina and Supercopa de Espana Femenina – only missing out on the Champions League in losing to Lyon in the final.
However, on the eve of the tournament and just three days from their first game, Spain were dealt a massive blow. Star player, and reigning Ballon d’Or and FIFA The Best holder, Alexia Putellas suffered an injury in training which was latter confirmed to be to her ACL – ruling her out of the tournament and for the foreseeable future.
“Alexia Putellas suffers a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee,” a statement released by the Spanish Football Federation read.
“The tests carried out on the Spanish international on the afternoon of this Tuesday July 5 2022 at King Edward VII’s hospital in London, have confirmed that the captain of the Spanish women’s national team has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.”
Amaiur Sarriegi has been drafted in to replace her.
Finland team news
Finland will be looking to Natalia Kuikka to lead them. The 26 year-old has played many positions for both clubs and country but Finland’s head coach Anna Signeul plays her as a centre-back.
Further forward they will be hoping for a lot of energy from Eveliina Summanen and of course will be praying that soon-to-be 34 year-old Linda Sallstrom can stay fit. The striker has scored 50 times in 117 caps for her country and they will need her goal power against Spain.
