Felix Auger-Aliassime spoiled Carlos Alcaraz’s homecoming. Canada secured a 2-1 upset over Spain in the Davis Cup group phase on Friday afternoon. Alcaraz lost 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2 to an inspired Auger-Aliassime who dominated on his serve with 16 aces. He would break Alcaraz late in the second set and twice in the third. Roberto Bautista Agut had given Spain the first point. He fought back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win against Vasek Pospisil. Auger-Aliassime and Pospisil showed no sign of weariness. They came from behind to beat Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the decider. Spain — who beat Serbia 3-0 on Wednesday — now face South Korea on Sunday to determine which two advance to the quarterfinals in November in Malaga.

South Korea suffered consecutive defeats. Miomir Kecmanovic overcame Soonwoo Kwon 6-3, 6-3 to keep Serbia’s Davis Cup qualification chances alive in Group B. Dusan Lajovic had beaten Seong-chan Hong 6-4, 6-0 and Miomir Kecmanovic overcame Soonwoo Kwon 6-3, 6-3 to secure the result and keep Serbia’s Davis Cup qualification chances alive in Group B. The Koreans avoided a shutout in the doubles when Ji Sung Nam and Min-Kyu Song overpowered Nikola Cacic and Filip Krajinovic 6-4, 6-2. Park Seung-Kyu’s men will be rooting for Canada against Serbia as well as needing to pull off a huge upset against the home side on Sunday if they are to keep their slim Davis Cup hopes alive.
