Spain qualified for the Finals with a 3-1 victory over Romania in Marbella. The Iberian nation first appeared in the Davis Cup in 1921. They finished as runner-up in 1965 and 1967 before dominating in the 2000s with five championships between 2000 and 2011 as well as second place berths in 2003 and 2012. Spain added a sixth title in 2019 against Canada at the first new-format Davis Cup Finals in Madrid, with Roberto Bautista and Rafael Nadal leading the way. Alcaraz – currently world No.1 – will front a strong team this year.

Serbia was awarded direct access to the Finals 2022 as a replacement for Russia. Having played as Yugoslavia between 1995 and 2003 and as Serbia & Montenegro between 2004 and 2006 they lifted the trophy in 2010 at France’s expense. Serbia made the quarter-finals in 2019 and two years later reached the semi-finals. Viktor Troicki is buoyed with the presence of this year’s Wimbledon champion Djokovic, the 21-time Grand Slam champion is part of a team consisting of five top-ranked players including Miomir Kecmanovic, who recently reached the semi-finals at Los Cabos.
