Southampton vs Norwich predicted XIs: Team news as Krul return gives Smith a decision to make

Published: 13:31, 24 February 2022

Southampton will be hoping they can pile the misery on Norwich City when they host the Premier League relegation-battlers on Friday at 8pm (UK time).

The hosts are currently 10th in the Premier League and appear to be safe from the relegation fight but are also perhaps too far out for European football. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are currently 10 points behind sixth-placed Arsenal and have played two games more than the Gunners, so it may just be about finishing as high as possible to build for next season now.

Norwich will hope Southampton’s players have started packing for the beach already as they continue their fight against relegation. It’s currently a battle they are losing though, with Dean Smith’s side bottom of the Premier League and five points behind 17th-placed Newcastle having played a game more. There is also the small fact that 18th-placed Burnley have two games in hand on the Canaries, so the gap could be even bigger.

Southampton team news vs Norwich

  • Ins: None
  • Outs: Romain Perraud, Alex McCarthy, Lyanco
  • Doubts: Nathan Tella

Nathan Tella could be in contention for a return, though that is not yet confirmed. Tella was initially scheduled to return ahead of Southampton’s game with Everton last weekend but suffered a setback, with Hasenhuttl harbouring hopes he would be fit for this match. However, Saints will definitely be without Romain Perraud, Alex McCarthy and Lyano, with the latter not expected back until at least April.

Norwich team news vs Southampton: Krul gives Smith “decision to make”

  • Ins: Tim Krul, Lukas Rupp, Jacob Sorensen
  • Outs: Adam Idah, Andrew Omobamidele
  • Doubts: None

It has been a good week for Norwich off the pitch as they have been able to welcome a handful of players from injury. Lukas Rupp and Jacob Sorensen are back in training and could feature, but the bigger boost is Tim Krul’s return.

The Dutch goalkeeper has been out with a shoulder injury and has made himself available to start against Norwich, giving Smith something to think about.

“We’ve got Tim Krul who is back in training and putting himself in contention,” Smith told reporters.

“He’s asking the question of us, it’s now a decision for myself to make.”

In Krul’s absence, Angus Gunn has stepped in between the sticks but he hasn’t had the best record in the Premier League this season. The English goalkeeper has kept just one clean sheet in his six Premier League appearances, conceding 16 goals. He has conceded at least three goals on four separate occasions, while his save percentage is just 55.56%, the second-lowest among goalkeepers to play at least five matches this season. By contrast, Krul’s save percentage is 63.37% – still not great, but certainly an improvement on Gunn.

Elsewhere, Adam Idah and Andrew Omobamidele are still injured.
