Real Sociedad vs Athletic Bilbao build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

To reach a first Copa del Rey final in over three decades, Real Sociedad had to navigate past three fellow La Liga clubs, most notably Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. Los Txuri-Urdin faced a less-than-formidable side next up, but Mirandés proved to be worthy opponents as they would only lose by a single goal margin in both semi-final legs. Heading into the showpiece event, Real Sociedad have only claimed one win across their previous five matches in all competitions and just before the international break they were humbled 1-6 at home by a ruthless Barcelona side.

Only the aforementioned Barça (30) have claimed more Copa del Rey successes than Athletic (23) but it’s been decades since Los Leones won the competition. Since that 1984 victory, they’ve reached the final on four occasions most recently in 2015 and to make this latest edition the Basque giants eliminated Barcelona in the quarter-finals before getting past Granada on away goals. However, like this weekend’s opponents, Marcelino’s men, aren’t exactly firing on all cylinders as they come into the final on a three-match winless streak in all competitions.

  • Real Sociedad (vs Barcelona): Remiro; Gorosabel, Le Normand, Zubimendi, Zubeldia, Merquelanz; Portu, Merino, Guevara, Oyarzabal; Isak.
  • Athletic Bilbao (vs Eibar): Simón; De Marcos, Álvarez, Martínez, Berchiche; Muniain, Vesga, López, Berenguer; Williams, García.

Imanol Aguacil has a near-full squad to choose from with Luca Sangalli being Real Sociedad’s only major absentee this weekend. He’s joined on the sidelines by Athletic midfielder Oier Zarraga, who continues to recover from a meniscus injury.

Player to watch: Alexander Isak (Real Sociedad)

The race to win the 2019/20 Copa del Rey Golden Boot can ultimately be decided this Saturday evening when leader Alexander Isak expectedly leads Real Sociedad’s forward line. Sweden’s next great marksman is currently on seven goals and his nearest challengers, Yuri Berchiche of Athletic Bilbao and teammate Adnan Januzaj, are three strikes behind. Isak also comes into this weekend’s showdown on 12 goals for the season, which is four shy of equalling his most prolific campaign (16 – 2019/20) and in three previous matches against The Lions, the 21-year-old striker has netted once while creating another goal.
