Sir Alex Ferguson reveals his greatest ever Manchester United captain

Sir Alex Ferguson has named his best ever captain at Manchester United, selecting Bryan Robson ahead of Roy Keane.

Keane, 50, enjoyed 12 trophy-laden years under Ferguson at Old Trafford between 1993 and 2005, winning silverware 17 times and even taking on the captain’s armband during the club’s illustrious treble-winning campaign in 1998/99.

Despite his success under the legendary Glaswegian, he has been snubbed by the man himself for his greatest ever skipper, with Robson, who turned out for Man Utd 461 throughout the 80s and early 90s, picked as the club’s ultimate dressing-room leader.

Under Ferguson, Robson lifted the inaugural Premier League trophy as Man Utd skipper and the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup at the expense of Barcelona, even earning the nickname ‘Captain Marvel’ on the terraces, which may explain Ferguson’s thought process.

“Well, he was easily the best captain I had,” Ferguson told Man Utd’s official website about Robson. “I think over the period he was at United, he was the best player.

“The players loved him. They responded to him and he was the longest-serving captain in my time anyway.

“It’s difficult for a captain because sometimes he has to tell the truth to players, you know? The encouragement he’s got to give them sometimes can be quite volatile and he was like that, but the players did love him.

“They appreciated the time he took on them and another thing, he’s the only captain I knew who could make a decision on the pitch. He didn’t need to look over to me.

“He would do that and that’s unusual. In fact it’s very unusual because he had the balls to do that.”

Other Man Utd captains under Ferguson include Steve Bruce, who succeeded Robson in 1994, Eric Cantona during his final year in the sport between 1996 and 1997, Gary Neville between 2005 and 2011 after Keane, and Nemanja Vidic, who wore the armband as Ferguson announced his retirement in 2013.
