Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero should win the Premier League Player of the Year award, according to Sam Allardyce.

Aguero is enjoying yet another fantastic season as he continues to fire the goals in for City in their pursuit of a second successive league title.

Should Aguero win POTY? Five things to know…

  1. Aguero has made 26 Premier League appearances this season, scoring 18 goals and providing six assists.
  2. He is currently the top-scorer in the division ahead of the likes of Mohamed Salah, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane (all on 17).
  3. His highest-ever goal tally in the Premier League is 26, his total in the 2014/15 season.
  4. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Raheem Sterling are all being mentioned as potential winners.
  5. Last season, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah won the award ahead of City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, Allardyce offered his opinion as to which Premier League footballer deserves the prestigious individual award by the end of the campaign.

The former West Ham and Everton boss believes Aguero deserves the accolade for his performances both in this season’s set of fixtures and for previous successful campaigns.

He said: “It’s a tough one, there are definitely some good candidates this year, but I’d go for Aguero.

“Aguero has never won it and he deserves it for what he’s done over the years.

“I think everyone would probably favour Raheem Sterling at the moment with the way he’s going and the publicity he’s getting.

“But I think it’s taken for granted for Aguero is doing, and what he always does for Manchester City.

“So I’d like to see Aguero win it. Raheem Sterling is still young enough to win Young Player of the Year!”

Who are the contenders for the 2018/19 Premier League Player of the Year?

Alongside Aguero and Sterling, the main man being tipped to take home the Premier League Player of the Year award is Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman has helped the Reds improve drastically in defence since his arrival in January 2018, with Jurgen Klopp’s side conceding just 18 Premier League goals this season.

Reds teammate Mane has also impressed, scoring 17 goals and providing an assist as Liverpool try and win their first Premier League title in 29 years.

Sterling has taken yet another step up the footballing ladder this season, producing excellent performances for the Citizens, scoring 15 goals and providing nine assists. Those two figures combined means no Premier League player has been directly involved in more goals than Sterling so far this season.

Of course, you can’t forget Harry Kane but despite his 17 goals and four assists, he isn’t considered a top contender to win this time around. Some even feel Spurs teammate Son Heung-min has a greater claim.

With De Bruyne injured for the majority of the campaign, it seems to be between the two City and Liverpool stars which in truth, is perfectly understandable this season.
