Right around the halfway mark of the MLS season, Seattle Sounders, with 26 points from 17 games, sit in what would be the seventh and final Western Conference playoff spot, but with a game in hand on FC Dallas Nashville SC, who are a point ahead, in sixth and fifth, and on third-placed Real Salt Lake, who have 29 points. The Sounders are also three points up – with not one, but two games in hand – over their arch rivals, and Saturday afternoon opponents, the Portland Timbers. The Timbers, meanwhile, are suffering through a rough season. Although they sit 10th in the table, three points out of the playoffs, they have player more games than every single team in MLS with the exception of the last-placed Kansas City FC.
Both of these sides have struggled a bit for consistency of late, with Seattle having won three of their last five, but with a loss in between each, and Portland having managing two wins against underwhelming competition, while taking just two points from the other three. Portland won the last league meeting between these sides last August – in Seattle, it’s worth noting – but also suffered a 6-2 hammering the meeting prior to that.
The Timbers, who must compensate for the worst defensive record outside of the bottom three in the West, can take some comfort in the fact that the Sounders will be without key contributors in defense (Ecuadorian Xavier Arreaga), in midfield (Obed Vargas) and up front (Raul Ruidiaz, who’s scored five times in just eight appearances). At the same time, however, even in the absence of Ruidiaz, Seattle boasts five players who’ve scored multiple goals this season and three who’ve scored at least three, including joint-top scorer Jordan Morris. On the flip side, the Timbers come in with an almost entirely clean bill of health, and will seven of the eight players on their roster who’ve scored multiple goals thus far this season.
Sounders predicted XI: Frei; Tolo, Ragen, Gomez, Christian Roldan; Rusnak, Rowe; Morris, Lodeiro, Alexander Roldan; Montero
Timbers predicted XI: Ivacic; Bravo, Zuparic, Tuiloma, Van Rankin Galland; Williamson, Diego Chara; Yimmi Chara, Blanco, Moreno; Niezgoda
