Sassuolo and SPAL will square off at the Mapei Stadium on Thursday at 4.30pm (UK time), with both sides looking for a spot in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

Sassuolo have enjoyed a strong Serie A campaign so far and currently sit seventh in the table, just two points behind the Europa League places. However, their recent form hasn’t been great, winning just twice in their last six league outings. They were beaten 3-1 on the road at Juventus last time out in Serie A, which was the third game across their last five matches in which they’ve conceded at least two goals. However, they have only lost twice at home this season.

Meanwhile, SPAL are fighting for a comeback to Serie A and they currently find themselves fifth in the Serie B table, with just five points separating themselves from current leaders Empoli.

SPAL’s recent form has seen them win just two of their last seven Serie B games. They were on a two-game losing streak in the league prior to their victory on the road at Frosinone last week, but have recovered to gain some momentum heading into this contest against top-tier opposition. Worryingly for SPAL, they have never beaten Sassuolo in their history, but will be determined to buck that trend later this week.

So, can Sassuolo maximise their home advantage and book their place in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia? Or will SPAL cause an upset and secure their first ever victory over Sassuolo?

Sassuolo and SPAL’s previous line-ups:

  • Sassuolo (vs Juventus): Consigli; Muldur, Chiriches, Ferrari, Kyriakopoulos; Obiang, Locatelli, Traore, Duricic, Defrel; Caputo.
  • SPAL (vs Frosinone): Thiam; Ranieri, Vicari, Tomovic, D’Alessandro, Dickmann; Missiroli, Esposito, Di Francesco, Valoti, Floccari.

Sassuolo’s best striker Domenico Berardi is still missing through a thigh injury. Federico Ricci and Filippo Romagnia are also long-term absentees. It’s likely that manager Roberto De Zerbi will rotate from the defeat to Juve, which could see the likes of Gianluca Pegolo, Jeremie Boga and Nicolas Schiappacasse enter the first-team fold.

Meanwhile, SPAL will be without Lucas Castro, who is missing due to a knee injury, meaning Salvatore Esposito will likely continue in midfield, with Gabriel Strefezza also in line to start on Thursday.
