Sao Paulo vs Palmeiras build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Sao Paulo finished well clear of Peruvian side Sporting Cristal and Uruguay’s Rentistas but below Racing Club in the group stages, before knocking the Argentine side out in the round-of-16. With Hernan Crespo’s men languishing down in 16th place in the Serie A table, this and the Copa do Brasil represent Sao Paulo’s biggest chances of silverware this season. That said, given the level of competition remaining in the Libertadores, even getting to the final will be no easy feat.

Palmeiras are faring much better in league competition, sitting second only to Atletico Mineiro by two points. What’s more, the holders cruised through their Libertadores group with five wins and one defeat before sending Chilean side Universidad Catolica packing in the round-of-16. No side has retained the Libertadores since Boca Juniors in 2001 but Palmeiras are certainly well-placed given their form.

  • Sao Paulo (vs Athletico-PR): Volpi; Vinicius, Miranda, Leo, Welington; Liziero, Nestor; Gomes, Sara, Rojas; Pablo.
  • Palmeiras (vs Fortaleza): Weverton; Mayke, Luan, Gomez, Renan; De Paula, Rafael; Scarpa, Veiga, Wesley; Willian.

Luciano has been out since June with a muscle injury and will remain sidelined here for Sao Paulo. Luan Silva has an abscess problem and may sit this one out for Palmeiras.

Player to watch: Rony (Palmeiras)

With six goals, no player has scored more in this season’s Libertadores than Palmeiras’ Rony, who is level with Colombian striker Miguel Borja and illustrious Brazilian duo Hulk and Gabriel Barbosa.

The 26-year-old is blessed with electrifying pace and dynamic dribbling, while there are few better finishers plying their trade in Brazil right now.

Sao Paulo have conceded just two goals in four games since a 5-1 defeat to Flamengo, which includes a clean sheet against Palmeiras. But they’ll do well to keep Rony out for a second time.
