Sao Paulo vs Santos live stream: How to watch Brasileirão online

Two of Brazil’s most succesful and decorated clubs converge on the iconic Estadio do Morumbi on Thursday night in a must-win Brasileirao match (10.30pm kick-off, UK time).

After a rocky start under the 2020 Copa Sudamericana winner Hernan Crespo, Sao Paulo have started to pick up form and have firmly moved away from the relegation zone, a position they were not expecting to find themselves in a few months back. Santos meanwhile are still struggling, with the league’s second-most succesful club currently caught in the riptide of a 10-game winless run.

Sao Paulo vs Santos build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

This latest installation of The San-Sao, arguably the biggest derby in the state of Sao Paulo, two giants of Brazilian football meet looking to salvage their respective seasons and get into the Copa Libertadores qualification places. Tricolor Paulista, under former Chelsea forward Crespo, are unbeaten in four and currently 13th in the table, but the Argentinian coach will have aspirations of extending that run and mounting a late surge for the upper reaches of the division.

For Santos, the eight-time winners of the Brazilian top flight, they remain without a title since 2004, and that run will continue as they currently lie in 16th, just a place above the relegation zone. It’s a sad state for arguably the most-renowned footballing institution in Brazil, chiefly owing to Pele’s status as the Peixe poster boy, but recently-appointed Fabio Carille will care little for historic merit, as he has the task of simply avoiding an unthinkable relegation.

  • Sao Paulo (vs Chapecoense): Volpi; Arboleda, Miranda, Leo; Galeano, Liziero, Nestor, Welington; Rigoni, Luciano, Eder.
  • Santos (vs Juventude): Joao Paulo; Boza, Leonardo, Velazquez; Para, Camacho, Sanchez, Jonatan; Mota, Marinho, Baptistao.

The recent news for the hosts is that Brazilian legend Dani Alves is no longer at the club, with his contract being terminated last month. The 38-year-old, who recently won gold in the Tokyo Olympics over the summer, has left over a dispute regarding delayed salary payments owed to him by his boyhood club.

Player to watch: Eder (Sao Paulo)

Eder’s fruitful playing career in Italian football saw him scoop Serie B’s top scorer award in 2009/10 (27 goals) with Empoli, and culminated in the Brazil-born Azzurri international turning out for the likes of Sampdoria, and eventually Inter Milan, the apotheosis of his career. A versatile attacker, capable of playing across the frontline, Eder eventually upped sticks for the Far East, representing Jiangsu Suning between 2018 and 2020, but he is now back in more familiar pastures, returning to Brazil 16 years after he initially left Criciuma for Empoli. At 34, Eder is back in the country of his birth as a storied, seasoned striker who has 26 caps for Italy, and will bring a serious amount of experience to Crespo’s frontline, offering a striker savvy cultivated and refined in Europe.
