Santos vs Ceara build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Santos are the second-most successful side in Brazilian Serie A history, with only Palmeiras (10) winning the top-flight title more times. However, Santos have not tasted victory since 2004 and they got their quest for number nine off to the worst possible start last weekend. Fernando Diniz’s men opened the 2021 campaign away to Bahia and were thrashed 3-0, currently laying at the bottom of the table. Santos did bounce back with a win over Cianorte in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil third round tie, and they have a good recent home record, unbeaten in three.
While Santos were losing their opening game, Ceara got off to the best possible start with a shock result over Gremio. It was an exciting game at the Castelão in which Ceara saw a two-goal lead vanish before winning it in the dying stages of injury time. The win came after Ceara ended their Copa Sudamericana group stage in defeat, which cost them a place in the last-16 of the continental competition.

Player to watch: Marinho (Santos)
Santos’ defeat against Bahia last weekend wasn’t for a lack of trying, especially on Marinho’s part. The 31-year-old Brazilian was Santos’ most-dangerous attacking player once again, taking half of their 12 shots and hitting the target twice – the same amount as the rest of his teammates combined.
Unfortunately, Marinho ended that game with an Expected Goals tally of 0.22, with four of his six shots coming from outside the area as Santos struggled to break down Bahia’s defence. However, Marinho did bounce back to help Santos win their next game, scoring the second in their 2-0 cup win over Cianorte, his third goal of the campaign overall after netting two in the Copa Libertadores group stage.
