Salernitana vs Napoli build-up & previous line-ups:

It was a disastrous return to Serie A for Salernitana, who before this season last enjoyed top-flight football in 1998/99, the Stefano Colantuono-led team lost four successive games before a morale boosting 2-2 draw against Verona which has since led to a run of two wins across their next five league outings. That being said, they suffered three losses in that run, but did win last time out meaning Salernitana could remain unbeaten in two consecutive Serie A games for the first time since May 1999. From a historical perspective, Napoli are one of six teams against which Salernitana have never lost in Serie A: two draws in the two derbies played so far, in the 1947/48 season. Plus the club’s three wins against Napoli — between Serie A, Serie B and Coppa Italia — have all been at home albeit the last one was back in November 2002 in the second division.

No longer chasing Roma’s record for most consecutive wins to begin a Serie A season, Napoli’s focus is on maintaining their leadership of this young championship table, after playing 10 matches they have tasted nine wins and sit alongside Milan as the league’s remaining unbeaten teams. Luciano Spalletti’s men’s superior goal-difference is keeping them above the Rossoneri whom they are level on points with. Another victory on Sunday will see the Neapolitans win 10 of their first 11 top-flight matches for only the second time in history, after 2017/18, it’s also worth noting Napoli are the side with the highest clean sheet percentage (70%: 7/10) across Europe’s big five leagues coming into this weekend’s fixture. Plus since a 2-2 draw with newly promoted Pescara in August 2016 they’ve claimed 27 wins and three losses against such opponents which is the longest streak without a draw against newly promoted sides in Serie A (30).

  • Salernitana (vs Venezia): Belec; Zortea, Gyomber, Strandberg, Ranieri; Obi, Di Tacchio, Kastanos; Ribéry; Bonazzoli, Djuric.
  • Napoli (vs Bologna): Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Koulibaly, Rrahmani, Rui; Ruiz, Anguissa; Lozano, Elmas, Insigne; Osimhen.

Player to watch: Franck Ribéry (Salernitana)

Not quite a renaissance but Franck Ribéry is showing he’s still got it. The much-experienced 38-year-old Frenchman joined Salernitana as a free agent in the summer after his spell at Fiorentina came to an end. Having not been involved across his first four appearances the newly appointed skipper created a goal in each of Salernitana’s last two Serie A matches. He can subsequently become the oldest player since 2004/05 to provide an assist in three consecutive appearances in the competition, overtaking his former Bayern Munich teammate Miroslav Klose (37 years, 313 days in April 2016) – as the ex-French international will be 38 years and 207 days on 31 October.
