Lee Carsley’s reign as England U21 manager begins with a friendly fixture against Romania on Friday at 7pm (UK time).
The Young Lions suffered a group stage exit from the European Under-21 Championships earlier this year, leading to Aidy Boothroyd ending his five-year tenure in charge.

Romina U21 vs England U21 build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Like England, Romania exited the European U21 Championships at the group stage, though they were far more unfortunate. The Small Tricolours were unbeaten with five points from three games, only finishing below the Netherlands and Germany due to their inferior goal difference.
Romania have also caused plenty of problems for England’s U21s in the past, scoring four goals in the final 17 minutes to seal a 4-2 win at the 2019 Euros — a result that saw England crash out. Romania also inflicted England U21’s biggest-ever defeat, winning 4-0 back in October 1980.

Player to watch: Noni Madueke (England)
For a short time, it looked like Noni Madueke would leave PSV Eindhoven to replace his departing compatriot, Jadon Sancho, at Borussia Dortmund this summer. That move never transpired but the excitement around his talent has not died down.
Already capped 21 times at youth level for England, Madueke is fully established at club level and just last season returned an impressive eight goals and six assists across league and continental play, despite starting just 10 of his 31 outings.
And Madueke has continued that form into the new campaign, netting seven goals in 11 appearances in all competitions. If the 19-year-old can keep up this sort of output in the final third, while also becoming a key player under Carsley, it’ll only be a matter of time before he catches Gareth Southgate’s eye.
