Serie A title aspirants Roma and Inter Milan go head-to-head on Sunday at 11.30am, looking to keep pace with current leaders AC Milan.

Just four points separates Roma in third from Milan in first, with Inter sandwiched in between, setting the stage nicely for this encounter at the Stadio Olimpico. The Giallorossi enter this contest off the back of three straight wins, while Inter came up short in a banana skin defeat to Claudio Ranieri’s Sampdoria in midweek.

Roma vs Inter Milan build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Paulo Fonseca’s side have recovered expertly from that comprehensive 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Atalanta last month, winning each of their ensuing three contests, including Inter’s midweek nemesis Sampdoria in their first game of the new year.

The Nerazzurri would have climbed to the top of the table had they triumphed over Sampdoria, but Antonio Conte was unable to capitalise on Milan’s defeat to reigning champions Juventus, putting greater emphasis on getting a result this weekend.

  • Roma (vs Crotone): Lopez; Mancini, Smalling, Ibanez; Karsdorp, Villar, Cristante, Peres; Mkhitaryan, Perez; Mayoral.
  • Inter Milan (vs Sampdoria): Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Hakimi, Barella, Brozovic, Gagliardini, Young; Martinez, Sanchez.

Roma’s casualty list remains extensive. Nicolo Zaniolo, Javier Pastore, Antonio Mirante, Pedro, Davide Santon, Riccardo Calafiori, Federico Fazio and Leonardo Spinazzola all occupy the treatment room. Matias Vecino, Andrea Pinamonti and Danilo D’Ambrosio remain sidelined for Inter meanwhile.

Players to watch:

Roma: Having placed outside the top four in each of the last two seasons, Fonseca will be desperate to guide the capital club back into the Champions League, and he has so far made considerable strides to ensure the Giallorossi achieve just that. Captain Edin Dzeko has played a key role yet again, while Jordan Veretout has brought consistency to the midfield. But Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been the overwhelming difference-maker this season. The former Arsenal winger is the club’s top scorer and chief creator with 14 direct contributions (eight goals, seven assists), and will need to bring that form with him into the Inter game if Roma are to stand a chance of breaching Conte’s stubborn backline.

Inter Milan: The former Chelsea boss will no doubt be looking for a response after his side slipped up against 11th-placed Sampdoria in midweek, with Inter unable to capitalise on their dominance at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. One might argue that their midfield was far too pedestrian and lacked the cutting edge of previous games. Conte might, therefore, look to give his central midfield an adrenaline shot of energy, which could see the inclusion of Arturo Vidal. The mercurial Chilean can sometimes resemble a bull in a china shop, but if he can channel that energy and let his feet do the talking, then Roma could have a difficult morning. In fact, Vidal has scored 23% of his Serie A goals against capital’s teams: four against both Roma and Lazio.
