The second round of the 2023 French Open gets underway on Wednesday and Stefanos Tsitsipas will be hoping to continue in the tournament, but he has a potentially tricky tie. The Greek star has already been to the final of the French Open, two years ago, but lost to Novak Djokovic despite taking the first two sets.

There was another defeat to Djokovic in Australia earlier this year, but this time it was in straight sets, with Tsitsipas’ second Grand Slam final ending with a whimper. The 2023 French Open started with a four-set victory over Jiri Vesely, with Tsitsipas coming through 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7).

Although he is unseeded for the tournament, Roberto Carballes Baena comes into the French Open just outside the ATP top 50 and hoping to climb the rankings with a deep run at Roland Garros. However, deep runs aren’t really in Carballes Baena’s history with his best previous finish at a Grand Slam coming with a run to the third round of the 2020 French Open.

Earlier this year the Australian Open saw Carballes Baena bow out in the first round, beaten by Novak Djokovic, while there were also early exits at the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open and Madrid Open. The Spaniard did, however, reach the third round of the Italian Open and has beaten qualifier Emilio Nava 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of Roland Garros.

Prediction: Tsitsipas in four sets
