No one will have fancied either of these two players to reach this far in the tournament, especially Bautista Agut with his route to the semi-finals. The Spaniard was fifth seed for the tournament so just missed out on getting a bye, having to start in the first round against qualifier Taro Daniel, winning the match 6-4, 7-6 (4).
That win set up a thrilling second round tie against Nick Kyrgios but it was over before it began as the Australian had to pull out through injury. Bautista Agut’s reward was a quarter-final tie against world no.1 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev but he got through that with consummate ease, taking the match 6-3, 6-2.
Bellier’s run to the semi-final has been even more remarkable, however. The Swiss qualifier started had to play two games before reaching the main draw, beating Carlos Taberner 6-3, 7-6 (0) and Mats Rosenkranz 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (9) in the qualifying rounds as an alternate.
Since qualifying for the main round, Bellier has dropped one set en route to the semi-finals, starting with a straight sets victory over Federico Delbonis winning 6-3, 7-6 (6). He then knocked out fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who had earned a bye to the second round, 6-3, 6-4. And in the quarter-finals, Bellier came from a set down to beat Tallon Griekspoor 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Prediction: Roberto Bautista Agut to win in two sets
