River Plate vs Racing Club build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
The Copa de la Liga Profesional is an Argentinian cup competition created to fill a gap due to the delayed regular season and is acting as a precursor for the Argentine Primera Division which starts in July. In last season’s edition, River Plate finished second in their group to Boca Juniors, thus failing to reach the final, though the format has since changed.
River Plate now sit sixth in Zone A with three wins, one draw and two defeats from their opening six games, and are outside the four qualification spots for the quarter-finals. However, they are just a point off qualification with seven games left to play and have already faced rivals Boca Juniors, drawing 1-1.
Once place and one point ahead of River Plate are their visitors this weekend, Racing Club. They are one of four teams currently on 11 points after six games, but Racing are also outside the qualification zone on goal difference, scoring just six goals and conceding four.
- River Plate (vs Godoy Cruz): Armani; Vigo, Maidana, Diaz, Martinez; De La Cruz, Perez, Palavecino; Alvarez, Borre, Suarez.
- Racing Club (vs Argentinos Juniors): Tagliamonte; Schelotto*, Sigali, Novillo, Mena; Moreno, Gutierrez, Miranda, Lovera; Chancalay, Copetti.
Ezequiel Schelotto picked up an injury in Racing Club’s win over Argentinos Juniors and is expected to be out for a few weeks.
Player to watch: Rafael Santos Borre (River Plate)
River Plate have scored 12 goals in their six games so far in the competition, six of which came in their win over Godoy Cruz last weekend. Of those six, four were scored by striker Rafael Santos Borre in what was an exceptional individual performance.
The 25-year-old scored a first-half hat-trick as River Plate stormed to a 5-0 lead and added his fourth just after half-time, ending a three-game goal drought. European fans may remember Borre for his two years in Spain with Atletico Madrid, one of which was spent on loan at Villarreal during which he only managed four goals in 30 appearances.
After that unsuccessful spell, the Colombian returned to South America with River Plate where he has found goalscoring form once again, scoring 50 goals in 130 games across all competitions for the club. But his contract with the club is up in June, and Borre is being linked with a move back to Europe, with Lazio reportedly interested – though they do face competition in MLS and Brazil from Toronto FC and Palmeiras.
