Dominic Thiem comes into this week’s tournament on the back of being outplayed by the big-serving Quentin Halys in the ATP Estoril quarterfinals. The former world number three ended last year’s European clay swing with no victories across six tournaments played which only further highlights the challenges he’s faced since coming back from injury. Before that he’d been among the top performers (second only to Rafael Nadal) having finished as the runner-up twice at the French Open in 2018 and 2019. Given all of this, it’s quite surprising to know he boasts a poor record at Monte Carlo Masters, just one quarter-final appearance while suffering two first-round exits in 2014 and 2015.

An injury forced Gasquet to withdraw from his second-round match at the Miami Masters a few weeks ago. He’s since returned to action in Marrakech last week, but his performance was lacking with Alexandre Muller comfortably ousting him, the underdog would ultimately reach the final. The one-time world number seven has enjoyed success in Monte Carlo before. Gasquet reached the semifinals in 2005 as well as the quarterfinal stage on three further occasions (2007, 2013 and 2018). On top of that, he’s never suffered a first-round elimination since losing to David Nalbandian in 2003.
