Real Sociedad team news

After some midseason struggles had seemingly eliminated Real Sociedad from European contention, the Basque side have impressively righted the ship, with a single loss (away to leaders Real Madrid) and five wins in their last seven in the league. That run has La Real back in sixth, eight points clear of seventh-placed Villarreal (who, as newly-crowned Champions League semifinalists, are likely to be focused elsewhere). In Spain, the top six qualify for Europe. As thing stand now, Real Sociedad sit would be La Liga’s representative in next season’s Europa Conference League.

However, just two points ahead (and in La Loga’s lone Europa League spot) are their Friday night guests, Real Betis – and a single point ahead of them, in fourth (and a Champion League) is an Atlético de Madrid that just lost its last league contest in Mallroca and, the night before this game, will host Manchester City in the second leg of a Champions League quarterfinal. For La Real, there is all manner of upside remaining in this league campaign, with virtually no risk of falling out of the top six.

Unfortunately for the hosts, they will be without Nacho Monreal (knee), Ander Barrenetxea (ruptured thigh muscle) and Carlos Fernández and (vitally) Mikel Oyarzabal, both of whom are out with ruptured cruciate ligaments.

Real Sociedad predicted XI: Remiro; Zaldua, Elustondo, Le Normand, Munoz; Zubeldia, Zubimendi; Portu, Silva, Lobete; Isak

Real Betis team news

Like Real Sociedad, Betis started the La Liga season strong. Like La Real, Los Beticos have suffered through a couple of rough patches that temporarily knocked out of the European spots. However… yup, like Real Sociedad, Betis have shown a good bit of resiliency. They enter this rather important contest unbeaten in four league games, with three wins. Unlike their hosts, however, Betis come into Friday night’s game with a clean bill of health.

Naturally, in additional trying to win every game left on their own schedule, Betis will be intently watching Atlético’s exploits against Man City on Thursday. Diego Simeone will undoubtedly get a massive effort out of his side. Either Atleti who enter their second leg trailing Man City 1-0, put forth that massive effort a fall short, which could mean an emotional letdown and likely a temporarily dip in form. On the flip side, if Atleti are able to overturn the deficit and take the tie, there’s a good chance of a similar (if FAR happier) letdown, not mention the small matter of a Champions League semifinal.

Whatever happens, there’s a good chance the race for fourth in Spain will be wide open. Betis, already a lock for European football next season, are in a fantastic position to find themselves in the continent’s premier club competition.

Real Betis predicted XI: Bravo; Bellerin, Bartra, Moreno, Pezzella; Carvalho, Guardado, Canales, Fekir; Juanmi; Willian Jose

La Liga 2021/22 recent form:

  • Real Sociedad: LWDWW
  • Real Betis: LWDWW

Scoreline prediction: Real Sociedad 2-2 Real Betis

The door is wide open for each of these sides to make a late run at fourth in La Liga, and a spot in next season’s Champions League. In this one, given recent form and the injury report, it’s tempting to look toward a victory by the visitors that turns up the heat in the race for fourth in La Liga. However, the home side has been in strong form as well. That, combined with the home pitch advantage, makes it very tough to tip a winner here.
