Real Sociedad have reached an agreement to sign Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid for a season.

The 20-year-old Norwegian forward joined Los Blancos in January 2015 but has spent the last three seasons playing his football away from the club.

A highly promising talent, Odegaard made headlines at boyhood club Strømsgodset, where he made 25 appearances before his 16th birthday.

These standout statistics attracted some of Europe’s leading clubs and Odegaard would visit a couple before ultimately deciding to join Real, where idol Cristiano Ronaldo was plying his trade at the time.

Odegaard’s subsequent transfer, which former Real boss Carlo Ancelotti described as a PR exercise, was completed a month after turning 16 and he would debut in May 2015 coming on for the final 32 minutes in a 7-3 win over Getafe.

He would make one more appearance (3-1 v November 2016) before temporarily leaving for regular playing time at Dutch side Heerenveen (3 goals in 43 games) and more recently Vitesse (11 goals in 39 games).

His campaign with Vitesse proved a success and saw Odegaard’s name linked with Ajax and Bayer Leverkusen. However, the 18-time capped Norway international is keen on a future in Spain and opted to continue developing at Real Sociedad.

With a year left on his current Real deal, though reports suggest it will be extended, Ödegaard becomes the third player to leave this summer on loan following Jorge de Frutos (Real Valladolid) and Sergio Reguilón (Sevilla)
