Athletic Bilbao vs Real Madrid build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Hopes of playing European football in 2021/22 have vanquished for Athletic Bilbao who find themselves sitting nine points below a place in next season’s Europa League group stage. Marcelino’s side though will be looking to end this campaign on a strong note. However, they welcome Real Madrid on the back of registering just two wins across 11 previous league outings, a run that only includes two defeats. Athletic’s recent home form will give their visitors something to think about. They’re currently on a nine-game unbeaten streak (three wins and six draws).

With two rounds of fixtures left this season current La Liga holders Real Madrid are still in the championship picture. Zinedine Zidane’s men are two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid and know they can ill-afford to slip up in their remaining matches against Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal though Los Blancos have struggled to string together back-to-back wins of late. Since a four-game winning streak ended with a goalless draw at Getafe in mid-April their following results have been Cadiz (win), Real Betis (draw), Osasuna (win), Sevilla (draw) and Granada (win).

  • Athletic Bilbao (vs Huesca): Simón; De Marcos, Núñez, Martínez, Balenziaga; Morcillo, Vesga, López, Gómez; Villalibre, Sancet.
  • Real Madrid (vs Granada): Courtois; Park, Militão, Fernández, Gutiérrez; Casemiro, Modric, Valverde; Rodrygo, Benzema, Vinícius Júnior.

Peru Nolaskoain, Ander Capa, Iker Muniain and Yuri Berchiche are still missing for Athletic while Yeray Alvarez, Inigo Lekue and Oier Zarraga are doubts for the hosts. Real Madrid meanwhile are without Lucas Vazquez, Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Ferland Mendy and Raphael Varane.

Player to watch: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)

If anyone is likely to step up for Real Madrid this weekend it’s leading marksman Karim Benzema who has been enjoying his second most prolific season for Spain’s most decorated club. The 33-year-old French striker needs a brace to equal his best output during a single league season and he’ll fancy his chances of reaching 24 for the season against Athletic whom in 23 previous meetings in all competitions he’s bagged 14 goals which makes them Benzema’s favourite opponent (alongside Granada). He also comes into this matchday having ended a three-game scoring drought when netting in Real’s emphatic 1-4 win at the aforementioned Granada.
