Real Madrid will look to carry the momentum from their El Clasico win over Barcelona into Wednesday’s La Liga showdown with Osasuna (8.30pm kick-off, UK time).

Carlo Ancelotti secured his first big win over Barcelona back in the Real hotseat at the weekend, outfoxing Ronald Koeman 2-1, but celebrations have been short-lived as the club return to action in midweek against an Osasuna side absolutely flying at the minute.

Real Madrid vs Osasuna build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

It was a real litmus test to assess the current state of Real under Ancelotti, but the esteemed tactician passed the examination with flying colours, putting arch-rivals Barcelona to the sword in a 2-1 triumph, which has elevated the capital club up to second in the table, and as an added bonus, further blunted their beleaguered adversaries. For now, though, focus turns to Osasuna, whom Ancelotti has never lost as a coach against for Real.

The mood is equally jovial in Pamplona as Jagoba Arrasate has currently got Los Rojillos enjoying a purple patch that has them sixth in the table, meaning they enter this clash against the division’s ultimate heavyweights in confident spirit. The club have endured just the two defeats this term after 10 matches, and are currently unbeaten in four matches, though they are winless against Real in their previous 12 showdowns.

  • Real Madrid (vs Barcelona): Courtois; Vazquez, Militao, Alaba, Mendy; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Rodrygo, Vini Jr., Benzema.
  • Osasuna (vs Granada): Herrera; Vidal, U Garcia, D Garcia, Angel*; Torro, Torres, Oier, Brasanac, R Garcia; Avila.

Federico Valverde was a substituted substitute against Barca after coming on in the 72nd minute and withdrawing in injury time owing to a knee issue. The Uruguayan is hence likely to sit this meeting out, alongside Gareth Bale, Dani Ceballos, Isco and Luka Jovic. Ante Budimir and Aridane Hernandez are both training again in a boost for the visitors, but Jose Angel is suspended following his sending off vs Granada.

Rafa Nadal calls for Karim Benzema to win 2021 Ballon d’Or

Former world ranked No. 1 tennis player and renowned Real Madrid fan Rafa Nadal has backed Karim Benzema to secure this year’s Ballon d’Or, with the Frenchman currently in the form of his life and recently shortlisted for the sport’s most-coveted individual accolade.

Benzema is currently leading the charts in Europe’s top five leagues for most direct goal contributions this season, assisting seven times to go with his nine strikes, which also places him first in the race for La Liga’s Pichichi Trophy — only Mohamed Salah and Robert Lewandowski (both 10) have scored more across the continent.

Given his blistering form, another of sport’s most recognised and illustrious names has tipped him to secure the 2021 Ballon d’Or, with the Frenchman certainly in the mix alongside some big players to win the cherished gong.

Nadal tweeted: “He has my admiration as a player, he shows commitment to the sport and demonstrates professionalism at his age.

“Good luck Benzema and you have my support for the 2021 Ballon d’Or.”
